Warning: Based purely what I have read here, and a bowl of ham bean soup, I offer my opinion.

Mark,

Perhaps Lou was doing a parody of a Dean Martin Roast? Personally, I sure miss those. After all, rather than respond to your challenge by providing the facts, he bristles ("almost nobody saw this", "right wing talk show hosts", "clear you weren't there", "willing to shoot his mouth off without") rather than providing facts. Just a broken link to a massive maze of webmaterial.

Lou,

I lean more towards the assessment that Mark is correct in every point. When it comes to the citing of facts, perhaps you might check into the detail of those facts to ascetain the accuracy of the compilation. Case in point: you listed your website as a .com. It is a .org. Missing the smallest of things can lead one nowhere, too.

By now I guess it's safe to say almost nobody saw this, since I have had no reaction from anyone other than the email you sent to BDA, but I don't want your assessment to stand without comment.

Your post reminds me of the kind of comments you hear from right-wing talk show hosts talking about books they haven't read, based on the title and the author!

It's pretty clear you weren't there to hear my talk, because if you had you would never have written this. And it sorrows me to see a fellow public relations professional so willing to shoot his mouth off without bothering to do the research first.

It's also apparent you didn't bother to visit the BDA website, www.businessfordiplomaticaction/com, because you would have found the large body of research behind the presentation.

Next time I give a talk why don't you come to hear it before dumping on it!

Eric,

It was very nice of you to comment on the blog. I said it in the email as well as the post, but want to put it on the record here: I am a big fan of your writing and your podcasts. My degree of astonishment was with Mr. Capozzi, not you.

And any friend of Shel and Neville's is a friend of mine.

Hi Mark,

On the Record...Online is the podcast where journalists, bloggers, PR pros and newsmakers have a chance to put their opinions on the record online forever. For the most part, the show is totally unedited, unscripted and hopefully, as authentic as possible, with the understanding that the guests are all media pros.

After more than three years hosting the show, I've learned that it is not my job to pass judgment or to do anything to try and lead the interview. I always prepare thoroughly, but I'm always equally willing to ignore my questions and follow whatever train of thought the interviewee introduces.

That said, OTRO was the official podcast of the PRSA International Conference and I recorded 16 interviews in Detroit with keynotes and speakers (Jason Falls was one of them), so I'm going to need to listen to it again after reading this. But based on what I can remember, I came away from the interview with Lou thinking he did pretty good.

Best,

Eric
